Bag a Piece of Art!

Now on display at Bailey’s General Store, more than 30 handpainted grocery bags are waiting for your bid in a silent auction to benefit FISH of SanCap, a local human services organization. The bags will be shown and available for bidding until March 29.

For over 20 years, the Sanibel Captiva Art League has been painting Bailey’s General Store grocery bags to raise money for local charity organizations on the islands. Originally, the group painted the grocery store’s brown paper bags. Several years ago, the Sanibel Captiva Art League traded out the paper bags for “green” bags to use as their canvas.

“They’re more permanent. Some people who buy them frame the artwork,” said Jeannine Desmarais of the Sanibel Captiva Art League. Desmarais said a wide range of subjects were painted on each of the bags. “It’s really surprising what the artists select to paint and how well they execute their ideas on a cloth bag,” she added. “Artists have used oil paint, watercolor, acrylics and other mediums. The subjects are varied. It’s a wonderful exhibition of different styles and different subjects.”

Stop by Bailey’s General Store at the corner of Periwinkle Way and Tarpon Bay Road and place a bid on your favorite bags. You’ll have a chance to own a unique piece of art while you support a great cause. For more information, visit www.sancapart.com.
