Sister Mermaids Return!

mermaid sisters 2

Our beach is a mermaid magnet! We’ve had three sightings this
year alone. Yet sister mermaids are a rarity.

These beautiful mermaids, Lyndsey and Sydney, are back for a summer visit
along with their handsome brother, Zachary.

We caught up with the mermaids when they washed ashore for some sun and smiles. And according to their grandma, when not swimming with their fins in the ocean,  » Read more

Clear Your Gear

Clear Your Gear

Volunteers representing the Mono-filament Busters conservation group recently oversaw the installation of five new mono-filament fishing line recycling stations, expanding the scope of the islands’ three-year-old “Clear Your Gear” campaign.

Clear Your Gear, a collaborative effort among Sanibel and Captiva conservation organizations, aims to reduce the amount of mono-filament line and fishing gear left in our environment, which is very often detrimental to wildlife.

This recent article in the “Island Reporter” by Brian Wierima caught our eye. What lucky kids!

It can be a challenge for parents to find ways to keep their children busy during the summer vacation months, but the San-Cap Optimist Club, along with the Sanibel Recreation Center, is helping out in a big way.

Ever since early June, volunteers from the San-Cap Optimist Club have brought up to 15-20 Sanibel students fishing around the island every Monday morning,  » Read more

Not the world-record-sized or rare and perfect specimens on view in the museum, but the kinds of shells anyone can find on our local beaches on any given day. Why this “shell emergency?” The daily Shell Crafting programs are so popular that the museum is running low.  » Read more
