Next up for the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) weekly Virtual Speaker Series is “Living with Burrowing Owls” on Tuesday, February 9 at 4:00pm.

The session will be hosted by Beverly Saltonstall, a 20-year charter member of the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife, a group of dedicated volunteers who advocate for the Burrowing Owls and other wildlife of Cape Coral, a neighboring town about 15 miles northeast of Sanibel Island.

Cape Coral has the largest population of Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia floridana) in Florida, with an estimated 1,000 nesting pairs and upwards of 2,500 burrows within the city limits.

These diminutive owls are only about nine inches tall, and unlike other owls which are only active at night, burrowing owls hunt during the day as well as at night.  Instead of nesting in a hollow high up in a tree, they make their homes in underground burrows.  This virtual session will allow you to learn about the habitat, hunting methods and other characteristics of this remarkable species.

Virtual Speaker Series programs begin at 4:00pm and are approximately one hour in length.  The talks will be presented using Zoom and are limited to 100 participants so advanced registration is required.  Admission per device is $10 plus applicable taxes and fees.  To register, please visit www.CROWClinic.org or CROW’s Facebook page under the “Events” tab.
