Good Girls Revolt

On March 16, 1970, Newsweek magazine hit newsstands with a cover story on the fledgling feminist movement entitled “Women in Revolt.” That same day, 46 Newsweek women, Lynn Povich among them, announced they’d filed an EEOC complaint charging their employer with “systematic discrimination” against them in hiring and promotion.  The action would become the nation’s first gender discrimination lawsuit.

As part of BIG ART’s 2019 “Talking Points” season, Ms. Povich will discuss her personal journey on Tuesday, March 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the Strauss Theater, located at 2200 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island.

Her book, “The Good Girls Revolt,” now an original Amazon series, tells the story of the landmark lawsuit and how cultural shifts led a group of well-mannered, largely apolitical women, raised in the 1940s and 1950s, to stand up for their rights — and what happened after they did.

Ms. Povich became Newsweek’s first female editor in 1975.  She then went on to become editor in chief of Working Woman magazine and east coast managing editor for MSNBC.com.  She has co-edited a book on her father, famed Washington Post sports columnist Shirley Povich, and is the recipient of numerous honors, including the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington Press Foundation.
