History Lessons

Any history buffs out there?

While most of our guests visit Southwest Florida for our year-round sunshine and abundance of outdoor activities, it’s sometimes easy to overlook the rich history of our area.

To date, there are 57 places that have been named to the National Register of Historic Places in Lee County, Florida.

In addition to the well-known Edison and Ford Winter Estates, some of the others featured on the list include:  the Boca Grande Lighthouse, Captiva School and Chapel-by-the-Sea Historic District, the Sanibel Lighthouse and Keepers Cottage, the Mound House on Fort Myers Beach, Pineland Archeological District in Pineland, Useppa Island Site, Koreshan Unity Settlement Historic Site in Estero, and the Dean Park Historic Residential District and Dunbar Community School in Fort Myers.

On your next visit to Ocean’s Reach, map out your own historical tour of Old Florida!  (A good starting point can be found here.)
