Take me out to the ballgame — It’s time for some peanuts and crackerjacks!
The 29th Annual Islands Night is set for June 1st this year, pitting the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels up against the Tampa Tarpons — free of charge — at the Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers.
The tradition was started close to three decades ago by Sam Bailey, whose descendants own and operate Bailey’s General Store on Sanibel, as a way to get island visitors and residents together to enjoy some camaraderie.
“It’s one of our greatest traditions as a baseball club,” Fort Myers Mighty Mussels President Chris Peters said. “It’s always been one of our biggest and favorite nights of the year.”
Proceeds through beer and food specials benefit the Islands Night fund which helps support island organizations and local scholarships each year.
Gates will open at 6 p.m., with a fun parade at 6:15 p.m. and “batter up” at 7:00 p.m. Free tickets can be picked up at Bailey’s and businesses around the island, including Ocean’s Reach.
Hammond Stadium is located at 14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway in Fort Myers.
