New Location – Same Old Fun!

Here’s a surefire way to make your family’s summer plans go just swimmingly this year!

The crew over at Sanibel Sea School will offer their extremely popular summer camp at two locations this year — at the flagship campus on the east end of the island and at a new location, the Bailey Homestead.

“With COVID still prevalent, we were in search of a location that could accommodate more campers in a safe capacity,” Director Nicole Finnicum said. “We realized that we didn’t need to look any further than just down the road because the Bailey Homestead would meet all of our needs as a safe option for camp. With the open-air pavilion at the homestead, campers will be able to socially-distance and have access to fresh air all day.”

The 28-acre Bailey Homestead Preserve features the restored 1896 Bailey home along with 19 acres in the heart of Sanibel that is a wildlife corridor and hosts an abundance of native plants and animals. With wide open spaces, nature trails, a covered pavilion and five-minute drive to the beach, the homestead will be convenient and unique and offer space for many activities.

“Not only is this location enveloped in nature, but also is just about the perfect place to hold a summer camp,” Finnicum said.

While the homestead will be headquarters, in true Sanibel Sea School fashion, campers and counselors will hop into SX3 vans and head to the ocean for hands-on, marine science fun, as always.

Camp at the homestead will have an identical format to the Island Skills camps at the flagship campus. Each day will kick off with circle time. There will be a Monday morning beach walk, and campers will practice surf paddling each day to prepare for the Friday surf paddle race. Other activities like seining, snorkeling and macramé bracelet making will also be included in the daily lineup. Drop-off and pick-up will occur at the homestead, located at 1300 Periwinkle Way.

It will feature six weeks of Island Skills camps geared primarily toward campers 6-13, although it will also include two weeks for the sea squirts ages 4-6, a fishing camp for teens, and options for Counselors in Training each week. Each day, campers will be bused to the beach where they will explore the ocean, learn new things and have fun in the sun. Counselors will have activities planned at the homestead, like shell art and tie dye, or campers can play games on the lawn. For lunch, campers will head to the homestead to cool off under the pavilion and have a picnic-style meal before heading back to the beach for surfing.
