Day Trippin’: #7

What Florida may lack in elevation, we make up for in man-made towers.  Take the Shark Valley Observation Tower for example.

This giant tower spirals into the sky and overlooks the Florida Everglades, somewhat resembling a miniature Space Needle, despite being only a fraction of the height.  Built back in 1984, it’s dubbed one of the best overlooks in the state, and not only are the views worth checking out, but the trail to get there is well worth it, too.

Upon arrival at the Florida Everglades National Park (about a two-hour drive from Ocean’s Reach), look for signs to the tramroad, which is the only way to access the Shark Valley Observation Tower.  Note that you cannot drive your car to the observation tower; the tram is the only vehicle that can transport you to and from the parking lot.  Guests also enjoy taking the trail by foot or by bike.

Once you get to the observation tower, you’ll ascend to the highest elevation you can reach by foot in the entire park — 70 feet into the sky.  There, the views from the top of the tower stretch 20 miles panoramically in every direction, offering the most unique vantage point in the Everglades!
