Reeling in the Fun

Sanibel summer

Kids in the Sanibel Recreation Center’s summer camp program just reel in the fun!

Hosted by members of the Sanibel-Captiva Optimist Club, more than two dozen “Junior Anglers” spent the seven weeks of summer break traveling to different fishing locations around the island, including Tarpon Bay Explorers, Blind Pass, the JN “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and the Causeway Islands. They also took a cruise aboard an Adventures in Paradise vessel, which resulted in more than 40 fish caught!

In addition to fishing, the campers enjoyed plenty of good ‘ole fashioned summer fun. Just take a look here!

Participants in the Sanibel Recreation Center’s summer camp range from first to eighth graders, who were all able to enjoy age appropriate activities. Each day’s itinerary included fun physical activities, educational components, and creative activities for the campers to enjoy. In addition to a weekly field trip schedule, this summer’s special activities included sailing in partnership with the Captiva Yacht Club, golfing with the Sanctuary Golf Club, snorkeling instruction by the Sanibel Sea School, “Animal of the Week” presentations by CROW, and a field trip to the beach guided by docents from the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum.

No wonder the kids never want summer to end!
