What a Hoot!

Here’s something fun for the kids!

Hoot, by staff favorite author Carl Hiaasen, is a humorous adventure novel for middle-grade readers in which a group of children tries to save the habitat of a colony of pint-sized burrowing owls from being bulldozed.  Published in 2002, the book became a New York Times bestseller, won a Newbery Medal, and was subsequently made into a motion picture, currently available to rent on Amazon Prime.

Then next time you bring your family to Ocean’s Reach, take a quick jaunt across the river to Cape Coral, one of our neighboring communities which proved the inspiration for the fictional town in Hoot, and look for the cute little fellas yourselves.

CCFW (Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife) holds the Annual Burrowing Owl Festival every February.  Better yet, you can spot the ground-dwelling birds — plus butterflies, migratory birds, and alligators — most times of the year at the Rotary Park Environmental Center, about a half-hour drive from the Sanibel Causeway.
