Expedia has named Sanibel one of the “12 Amazing Islands You’ll Only Find in the U.S.” due to its white sand, wildlife, zero traffic lights and abundance of seashells.
“When rounding up the best U.S. islands, we took various factors into account, some of which included unique characteristics and less-trafficked coastlines. Between its enchanting seashell collection and peaceful naturalized beaches, Sanibel Island easily earned a spot on the list,” said Chloe Mulliner, author of the article.
Science Director and Curator of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum Dr. Jose Leal isn’t surprised by this accolade.
“The unique natural environment, successful conservation status, and, of course, shelling, put Sanibel on the national media map again. Through my work at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, I am proud to be a part of the local community!” Dr. Leal said.
Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce Member Services Manager John Lai credits Sanibel’s hometown feel for helping it make the list.
“It’s certainly an honor to be recognized by a brand as recognizable as Expedia. The pristine nature of our barrier island, coupled with the preserved feel of small town Americana that our restaurants and retail stores have is difficult to recreate and makes our destination a unique vacation experience for every guest,” Lai said.
