Laura Collins has seen what Special Olympics Florida can do for a person with intellectual disabilities. “There’s not just an increase in physical fitness and good health,” said Collins, director of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Florida. “There’s an increase in self-esteem and self-worth. It helps you become a contributing member of society.”

For the second year in a row, Floral Artistry of Sanibel will host a floral design workshop by Dutch Master Florist Mark Frank.

Due to the popularity of last year’s event, he will teach two separate workshops this year – one using traditional design methods, and another with a modern approach to florals. Participants will create their own centerpieces from fresh flowers that they can take home.  » Read more

Blessing of the Fleet

 

The “Blessing of the Fleet” is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities and is meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season.

The annual Blessing of the Stone Crab Fleet is planned for Saturday, September 28 at the Rod and Gun Club in Everglades City.  The boats tie up along the shore and rose petals are scattered on their decks by several of the fishermen’s daughters.   » Read more
