It will soon be the one-year anniversary of when Hurricane Ian made landfall, changing the landscape of Sanibel Island as we knew it.
One year of incredible hardship, exhausting clean up work and frustrating red tape. But it has also been one year of exceptional kindness, empathy and compassion, especially from the Ocean’s Reach guests we miss so dearly.
As we have communicated, we are working diligently to restore the resort and reopen as soon as we can. We should have news of when we will once again be taking reservations within the next few months.
In the meantime, if you’ll be in the area next week, you’re invited to attend several island events that will be commemorating the anniversary and reflecting upon our community’s resiliency over the past year. Please click on the links for more information:
- Thurs, Sept 28 at 7:00 a.m.: City of Sanibel “Hurricane Ian Sunrise Rememberence” at Lighthouse Beach Park
- Thurs, Sept 28 at 3:00 p.m.: The “Community Service of Hope: 1 Year Anniversary of Ian” at The Gathering Place at St. Michaels located at 2304 Periwinkle Way
- Sat, Sept 30 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.: Sanibel Community House “Community Reunited” at The Community House located at 2173 Periwinkle Way
This past March, St. Michaels hosted “Hope Rising,” an evening of post-Ian artistic expression which hundreds of people attended at the Sanibel Rec Center. It was an evening of art, poems, short stories and musical selections that you can see here. They also shared a video of Hope Rising with nature around the island. We are sorry that we cannot be with you on the anniversary, but Ocean’s Reach is always in our thoughts and prayers. We left the Saturday night before Ian and it seems like forever. We miss you! We are waiting patiently for the time we can visit you all again!! Sending you hugs and love!!
