Not only was this year’s Sanibel Shell Show a “virtual” success, it also gave us the opportunity to delight in some spectacular new photography, courtesy of their photo contest sponsored by Beachcombing Magazine.
The shell photo contest featured seven categories, plus Sanibel Stoop and Favorite Shell photos. Shell aficionados from 15 countries submitted a total of 424 entries.
Nearly 300 votes were cast for the People’s Choice award, won by Lorna Littrell for her photo of a horse conch at sunset.
Second-place winner was Karen Blackford, who submitted a photo of shellers in a tide pool along Middle Gulf Drive, followed by Amy Tripp’s third-place winning photo of a zig-zag scallop.

OMG! The pictures are so beautiful. I so wish I could have been there. We had to miss our 2020 fall trip and postpone our 2021 spring trip until October 2021. I try to get to Sanibel every spring and fall, and hadn’t missed a year since 1993. I can’t wait to be on the beach shelling again with my 86 year old Mother. Even with dementia, she still has the shelling bug. I hope I have it for the rest of my life, just like her.
