Got the bug for collecting seashells on the Sanibel seashore? You’re not alone! View this mobile shelling sensation designed and crafted by a fellow community of obsessed shell lovers. Hence the name of the shell-saturated VW, The Shell Love Bug!

A talented and enthusiastic team of over 65 artistic shellers led by Sanibel’s Pam Rambo was commissioned by the Lee County Visitors and Convention Bureau to “shellabrate” the first annual National Seashell Day on June 20, 2016. The marathon project was completed in just 34 days, and included over 1,200 gluing hours! The Shell Love Bug continues to attract large crowds at local tourism promotional events.

For you trivia buffs, this 2005 convertible Volkswagen Beetle has been “shelldazzled” with more than 20,000 shells, representing 67 species, all of which are native to Southwest Florida beaches.  The combined weight of the shells and the 100+ tubes of Marine GOOP which were used for gluing add up to more than 200 pounds!
